Attaching an outdoor structure to the house would have shaded the east-facing kitchen and family room too much. This detached structure leveled the sloping yard by raising the south end approximately 3 feet. Each of the 4 columns burried in 4 feet of subterranean concrete footings. Imported soil and crushed rock raised far end of patio 4′ from existing sloped lawn. Column-beam-rafter connection is custom fabricated plate steel to minimize exposed hardware. 6×6 columns are cast into 3′ deep footings and wrapped with 1×8 for concealed electrical components.
