Building A Path To Freedom | Rampathon 2023

In a world where accessibility and inclusivity are paramount, community service initiatives play a crucial role in transforming lives. One such annual project that embraces the spirit of giving back is “Rampathon”. This event is sponsored by the esteemed Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties.   They created a remarkable initiative bringing together volunteers from all over the Puget Sound.  Our crew at Tenhulzen Residential Design Build Remodeling generously volunteers their time to construct ramps for families in need. This Mother’s Day weekend, we had the privilege of installing a ramp for a recipient who shared her remarkable journey and the transformative impact this ramp would have on her life.

“So tell me, what happened? When was the last time you were able to get out of the house?” asked Traci Tenhulzen.   “About two and a half years ago. Well, I didn’t go out except to go to the doctor.” Replied Judith.

Accessing the Outdoors: A Life Bound by Limitations

Imagine being confined to your home for years, with limited opportunities to step foot outside. Judith, the brave recipient of this year’s Rampathon, has been facing this very challenge. She recounted how her dear friends in the community would lend their strength and help her navigate the daunting aggregate steps.  They would transfer her into a wheelchair whenever she needed to visit the doctor. Though their support was invaluable, it was not without its risks, as a few mishaps necessitated the assistance of emergency services. Judith’s resilience in the face of adversity is truly inspiring.

A Life of Activity:  Limited by Health

Judith, a former school principal, reflected on her past life filled with boundless energy. She effortlessly moved from her office to a bus, portable classroom, or gym, ever ready to tackle any issue that arose. However, her vitality was curtailed due to the effects of diabetes and arthritis, conditions that significantly impacted her mobility. Nevertheless, she remains grateful for the abundant resources available in the Seattle area, helping individuals like her regain their freedom and independence.

Learning about the Master Builders Association was a turning point for Judith and her caregiver husband Richard. Sound Generations, a nonprofit organization offering support to caregivers, shed light on the difficulties they faced in venturing beyond the confines of their home. The suggestion to explore the Rampathon initiative sparked hope, and they mustered the courage to submit an application. Much to their surprise, the call from Tenhulzen Residential arrived, marking the beginning of a life-changing journey.

An Exciting Transformation

The enthusiasm surrounding the construction of the ramp is palpable. The freedom to explore her beautiful yard and indulge her love for the outdoors once again will be a priceless gift. For someone who spent 45 years living on a farm and relishing the abundance of nature, this ramp represents more than just a physical structure; it embodies the restoration of her zest for life.

Tenhulzen Residential’s involvement in the annual Rampathon, sponsored by the Master Builders Association, epitomizes the power of community service. Their dedication to transforming lives and creating accessible pathways serves as a shining example of how a community can come together to make a profound difference in the lives of those facing mobility challenges. The completed ramp will not only grant Judith access to the outside world but also symbolize the solidarity and compassion that binds us as a society. Through initiatives like these, individuals like Judith can regain their independence, fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment within their communities. Together, we can continue to build bridges, both metaphorical and physical, for those who need them the most.
