Aging in Place Remodeling and CAPS Design

Aging in Place Remodeling

Aging in Place Remodeling, Done by a CAPS-Certified Team

Most people don't want to move. They want to stay in the home they love, with just a few things made safer and easier. That is some of the most meaningful work we do.

Start Your Project

At Tenhulzen Remodeling, we design and build homes that adapt as life changes: a step removed here, a doorway widened there, a bathroom reworked so it is beautiful and safe. Done well, none of it looks medical. It just looks like good design that happens to keep you independent longer.

The Basics

What "Aging in Place" Really Means

Aging in place means staying in your own home safely and comfortably as your needs change, instead of moving to assisted living. It can be as simple as better lighting and lever door handles, or as involved as a main-floor primary suite and a curbless, roll-in shower. The right answer depends on your home, your health, and your plans, which is exactly why it starts with a real conversation, not a catalog.

The Credential

What a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) Does

CAPS is a certification from the National Association of Home Builders. A Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist is trained to assess a home for safety and accessibility, understand the needs of aging and mobility-challenged homeowners, and recommend modifications grounded in universal design, spaces that work for people of every age and ability.

The difference in practice: a CAPS-certified remodeler sees the whole picture. Not just "add a grab bar," but where the light falls, how the floor transitions, whether the threshold trips a walker, and how to make it all feel intentional rather than institutional.

The Expert Behind the Work

Our aging-in-place work is led by Merylin Ortac, a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist and interior designer at Tenhulzen. What We Build

Aging-in-Place Modifications We Build

Every project is different, but the work often includes:

  • Curbless, roll-in showers with elegant tile and built-in seating
  • Grab bars that look like design, not equipment
  • Widened doorways and hallways for walkers and wheelchairs
  • Stepless, no-threshold entries into the home and key rooms
  • Main-floor primary suites so everything is on one level
  • Lever handles, rocker switches, and better lighting throughout
  • Non-slip flooring and smoother transitions between rooms
  • Walk-in tubs and universal-design bathrooms built to last

Real Work

Aging-in-Place Projects We're Proud Of

Real work tells the story better than any list. A few we have been part of:

Why Tenhulzen

Why Homeowners Choose a Local, CAPS-Certified Remodeler

Aging-in-place work is personal, and it happens in an occupied home, often with the very person it is for living right there through it. Our whole design-build process is built for that: every decision made before demolition, one accountable team from design through the final walkthrough, and a 24-month workmanship warranty behind it. We have done this across Woodinville and the greater Eastside for decades, and we treat these projects with the care they deserve.
